Performing Dunescapes

Young people take inspiration from Studland sand dunes.

Two carefully selected artists have been chosen to engage with young people in the National Trust Dynamic Dunescapes project, through the performing arts. Performing Dunescapes is taking place in the Purbeck area of Dorset and participants are using the sand dunes at Studland as their inspiration.

Isaiah Dreads is a 25 year old Dorset-based acclaimed hip hop artist, MC and rapper. He has deep rooted connections with the Dorset landscape, making inspiring lyrical music. Isaac Farmer, 24, is a street dance artist and choreographer, also based in the south west. Both creatives are working with young people from Purbeck Youth and Community Foundation and Year 9 and Year 10 students from The Swanage School.

Isaiah and Isaac are leading music and dance workshops to inspire the young people and their imaginations. Visits to the sand dunes at Studland have been the source for their creativity. The groups have been working with the National Trust on their site visits, with staff sharing important geographical and environmental information about the landscape.

Music and dance inspired by the outdoors is key to this project. Many of the young people taking part have never explored the sand dunes in this context before and are gaining a new understanding of the landscape in their local area. Isaiah and Isaac are inspiring them with music and dance, bringing their expertise and skills to help the group get creative and perform together.

Isaiah Dreads started making music at the age of nine and has since performed at Leeds and Reading Festivals, Glastonbury, Wireless, Bestival, Lovebox and Isle of Wight Festival. He has been featured on BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra and his latest release ‘Bumpkin Freestyle’ came out in September. He created the track for the Green Space Dark Skies Dorset event which took place at Maiden Castle in June this year.

Isaac Farmer is an experienced street dance teacher and choreographer and has been dancing for fifteen years with Shake Dance. He has won multiple titles at regional, national and international level including UDO World Super Crew Champions in 2019. His credits include performing with High Five on Britain’s Got Talent, MOVE IT Main Stage and Breakin’ Convention UK Tour.

Performing Dunescapes is a partnership between Activate Performing Arts and the National Trust, funded by the Trust. It is part of the Dynamic Dunescapes project, a national project focussed on important areas of dunes across the country.
