As a lovely way to round up 2024, three members of our team – Jen Walke-Myles, Jude Allen and Emily Thompson-Smith – reflect on the stand out moments of this year.

Jen Walke-Myles, Executive Producer, said: “This year I worked on our new promotional film to show the impact of what we do, and how we connect and uplift people through our events and projects. For me, this film captures so well the huge range of things we make happen as a small team. I’m really proud of the benefit we bring to artists, creative freelancers and our community across Dorset and the UK. If you haven’t seen it yet, please have a WATCH.

My other stand out moment is wearing my Mum hat. My eldest daughter Betty, aged 7 is in Premix, Activate’s inclusive youth performance company. As a child with complex needs, she goes to Premix sessions on weekends and in school holidays: it’s one of the only holiday clubs she can go where there’s 121 support. At a recent session I was blown away by the skill and experience of the care staff and the way they adapted everything for the different children. It was so uplifting to see how much they all enjoyed it.”

Jude Allen, Remix Project Manager said: “2024 was a phenomenal year for The Remix Family!
It was an unforgettable year packed with incredible performances and creative collaborations! With five major opportunities to shine, 2024 truly showcased the spirit, talent, and inclusivity at the heart of our community.

We had a magical start at Origins. In March, we had the honour of performing at Origins, hosted by Pavilion Dance South West. Under the inspired choreography of Amy Groves, The Remix presented a dazzling reimagining of the classic Cinderella. This fresh and emotionally moving rendition captivated audiences, blending the talents of both our Seniors groups and The Originals for an unforgettable performance.

In April there was more Easter School brilliance featuring the amazing Isaac Farmer, a renowned street dancer from Dorset. Isaac worked with local groups to create a vibrant street dance piece, performed at the Street in the Park Festival in May. Meanwhile, The Originals teamed up with Aimee Hobbs to craft a stunning curtain raiser for Midsummer Madness with All Sort’d, taking the stage at the Mowlem Theatre during the Easter holidays.

In July, our Remixers took a journey back in time with Treehouse Theatre, transforming into pilgrims for a special performance of Shaftesbury Tales. Held at the Child Okeford Village Hall, this rich storytelling experience brought history to life and showcased the group’s boundless creativity.

The summer holidays culminated in an explosion of artistry at the Activate Summer School. Over 50 young people from all four Remix groups gathered at the Bay Theatre studios, filling the space with vibrant energy and creativity. Each day was a blend of dance, music, and story-making around the theme Life’s an Adventure, proving that the sky is truly the limit when we come together to create.

None of this would have been possible without our exceptional team of artists, support staff, and collaborators. Led by the visionary Aimee Hobbs, The Remix has flourished through partnerships with freelance artists, theatre companies, and local arts organisations. Together, we’re building an inclusive arts community where everything is possible and everyone is welcome.

As we look ahead, The Remix continues to grow from strength to strength, nurturing the artists of the future and shaping a world where creativity knows no boundaries. Here’s to many more adventures to come!”

Emily Thompson-Smith, Rehearsal Director of DYD said: “A definite highlight of 2024 for me was Street in the Park! Seeing DYD and all the other talented performers spring to life in the flashmob and dance with such joy was so much fun!”
