Activate has an ongoing commitment to supporting young people, making performing arts accessible and breaking down barriers. Recently, we created 2 bursaries enabling Weymouth College students, Miles Evans and Olly Franks, to attend Frank Wurzinger’s clowning workshop at the Lyric Theatre in Bridport on Saturday 26th October. These students had been involved in the ground breaking Dusk Til Dark event for Worldbeaters’ premiere of Fireflies and were keen to take part in other Activate opportunities.
During the Frank Wurzinger workshop, Miles and Olly explored the importance of dropping social masks and being open and taking risks in a supportive environment. The aim of the session was to have fun and be real, break rules and disobey! and enjoy how clowns liberate themselves from the demands of being ‘good’, proper and well behaved. Participants used a mixture of physical exercises, improvisation games and techniques to create clown theatre.
Olly and Miles both enjoyed putting on the clown nose for the first time and how the workshop helping with confidence and focus.

Miles commented: “Thanks so much for having us! The Lyric is such a beautiful space and I can’t wait to hopefully come back soon”.
