WEYMOUTH COLLEGE STUDENTS JOINED FORCES WITH WORLDBEATERS FOR A SPECTACULAR PERFORMANCE AND A CHANCE OF A LIFE TIME

What made Fireflies so unique was the amazing participation of Weymouth College students who had rehearsed over several days with Worldbeaters.  This involved an intense process of learning new skills from high-impact drumming and dynamic choreography. Students mastered a performance combining light, sound and movement and how to constantly shift the focal point of the show and move around the audience to immerse them in the drama that unfolds before their eyes.

What is it like rehearsing with a world class company and preparing for a such a huge performance?  We asked three students who took part and also the Head of Creative Industries at Weymouth College about the process.

Miles Evans said: “This experience completely surpassed my expectations.  I loved the drumming and want to build on this. I really felt like part of the company during the rehearsal and the performance.”

Olly Franks, a performing arts student noted: “It was great to be pulled out of my comfort zone.  I didn’t realise I was going to pick up so many new skills.”

Nile Box emphasised: “It was a great experience to have these rehearsals and be part of Worldbeaters for one night.  It has certainly expanded my horizons and will look great on my CV.  The whole thing has been utterly awesome.

Seth Turner-Higgins, Head of Creative Industries, Weymouth College comments: “We have been very excited to have had the opportunity for our students to work with Worldbeaters on the Dusk Til Dark project, facilitated by Activate Performing Arts. Students enjoyed 2 days of workshops, culminating with participation in the live event in Weymouth town centre on Saturday evening. Experiences that allow students to  engage with industry professionals, when they can learn new skills and broaden their understanding, are invaluable. We are really grateful to have been offered this opportunity.

Thank you to Dorset Community Foundation for their support on the student workshops, along with We Are Weymouth, Dorset Council and Weymouth Town Council for their support across the whole event.
