We always like to chart the future successes of artists that Activate have supported, so we were delighted to hear about Artmusic’s latest achievement.
Activate is delighted to announce that Artmusic’s sound installation Lachrymae – commissioned for Inside Out Dorset’s Ridgeway Responses in 2014 is being presented at the fantastic Oerol Festival, Holland – 11-19 June, as part of the EXPEDITIE programme. Oerol (Literal translation: Everywhere) is a festival which takes place on a sandbar island in the North of Holland every year. From its roots as a small festival in 1982, Oerol has grown to become a true phenomenon. Every June, the island of Terschelling in the Wadden Sea is transformed for ten days into a unique natural stage for theatre, dance, street theatre, art and music. It has been presenting landscape based outdoor work in Europe to sell out audiences of 55,000 annually.
Lachrymae is an immersive sound and sculptural installation inspired by the transformation of girls to trees and tears to amber in Ted Hughes’ adaptation of Ovid’s Metamorphoses – the audience are invited to take a walk through the woods; chance upon fragments of music and teardrop sculptures.
Artmusic’s lead artist and composer, Helen Ottaway, was supported by Activate as part of a programme of Continued Professional Development to develop a relationship with the Oerol Festival – over the past 2 years.

Helen Ottaway from Artmusic has said: I’m very grateful for the support we’ve received from Inside Out and Activate and from the three of you in particular. We definitely would not be off to Terschelling in a month’s time without Activate’s considerable help.

We wholly recommend Oerol Festival too; Jen Walke, Activate’s Inside Out Dorset and Outdoor Arts producer is a regular visitor and finds it very inspirational.
We wish Artmusic continued success.
