COME AND SEE OUR PERFORMANCE AT LIGHTHOUSE POOLE ON SUNDAY 26TH OCTOBER 2014 AT THE CIRCUS FAMILY FUN DAY!
In October 2012 we hosted a residency for our integrated theatre company The Remix and invited French circus artist Angela Laurier and educationalist/artist Elize Lantz from La Brèche to assist our Director Claire Hodgson of Diverse City. The Residency enabled disabled and non-disabled young people to work together to develop circus skills thereby broadening the scope of their creative activities. By the end of a joyous three-day residency The Remix participants had overcome their initial fears and reservations about tackling a new discipline and were juggling, cartwheeling and making human pyramids. The residency ended with a showing of their work to an audience of smiling parents and carers.
Within just a few months of the Anglo French Remix residency in Poole, partners at La Brèche announced plans to set up a French Remix Company that would support integrated circus work with disaffected young people and young people with disabilities. This exciting development has led to further sharing of practice between UK and French artists including a series of workshops for the French Remix participants led by Laure Pique, Circus Artist and Teacher and Christine Hasne – Artistic Director and writer. At their first workshop, French Remix participants also enjoyed the skill and humour of Sean Gandini of The Gandinis
2013 saw continued collaboration with our French partners from La Brèche. We welcomed French contortionist Angela Laurier, French juggler Ludovic Ritter, Elise Lantz and Cirque Bijou aerial artists to deliver two residencies for Remix participants with our own Artistic Director Claire Hodgson, founder of Diverse City, and Assistant Artistic Director, Emma Harvey, who between them have a wealth of experience in terms of their work with disabled young artists.
Angela is uniquely skilled in the art if circus and brought an inspirational richness and warmth to the group whilst Billy Alwen and Steve Ryan of Cirque Bijou facilitated the excitement of aerial work with the young performers. Together The Remix and visiting artsits developed and delivered an outstanding production – Balancera - an original piece written by Remix member Hugo Lucas-Rowe. Balancera premiered at the Circus Family Fun Day at Lighthouse Poole on October 27th 2013 to an audience in excess of 300.
The Remix has two groups, one for young people who live in East Dorset and the other for those in the West (Remix East and Remix West). In 2014 the PASS project work with The Remix developed a stage further by involving both Remix East and West together with Portraint Dance and Dorset young musicians in a summer residency where they jointly developed a piece 'Summer Sensation' which premiered at the 2014 Inside Out Dorset Festival part of the 'Up in the Air' events in Studland in September. The young artists performed the hugely successful piece again at the Circus Family Fun Day at Lighthouse Poole in October 2014.
