Youth Arts Management for Theatre Course

This course was developed by ArtsWork, accredited with Middlesex University and co-ordinated by Activate. It provided an excellent practical induction to developing and running theatre workshops and projects with young people in schools and colleges, youth theatres, youth services and anywhere else you can think of that young people may congregate. Participants began by exploring the philosophy of youth arts, including the ‘what is art' debate; the intrinsic and extrinsic value of theatre activity; the influence of youth culture on the arts in general; and theatre as a vehicle for exploring social and political issues with young people.

This informative accredited course covered the strategies, skills and issues involved in devising and planning a theatre project with and for young people. From initial ideas through to the nuts and bolts of delivery, using professional artists, funding, press, publicity and evaluation, this course will leave you feeling fully confident, qualified and inspired to successfully use theatre in working with young people.

The course was practical and interactive, using creative examples and techniques, taking into consideration a wide understanding of preferred methods of learning. Methods used included group exercises, visual examples, case studies, discussion etc.

The course was delivered by a lead tutor, with 2 additional guest tutors. All ArtsWork trainers have been chosen because they are able to demonstrate a wide range of excellent skills, experience and understanding developed whilst working within the Youth Arts sector specialising in theatre.

The course is suitable for anyone working with or looking to set up/deliver a short or long term theatre project with young people – either those working in statutory education, theatre practitioners wanting to develop skills in working with young people or those working with young people outside of statutory education who want to develop theatre skills to implement in the workplace. There are no admission requirements, but experience of working with young people or within the arts is beneficial. In order to get the most out of this course participants are asked to come with a general idea of the sort of theatre project they are interested in running.
