Education, outreach and participatory projects in 2007
Alongside Inside Out’s programme of international performance, artists worked with people from across the county in a series of workshops and activities inspired by the events and their special locations.
In East Dorset, Periplum ran theatre workshops with young people from local secondary schools. In Poole, volunteers helped Sarruga to assemble their underwater creatures and pedal them through the streets. Meanwhile as part of Counter Currents in West Bay, young bands and DJs, with the support of West Dorset Youth Service, kept the music tent buzzing and energetic young dancers created a new street dance show with Upswing Aerial.
Alongside the Fire Gardens project by Carabosse, Bournemouth Borough Council Arts Development Unit organised workshops in the local community and Bournemouth; and Poole Cultural Hub ran a major project ‘The Illuminating Tale of Empress Eugenie’, with three local schools: St Katharine’s CE Primary School, Stourfield Junior School and St Lukes CE Primary, that culminated in an exhibition of the children's work at Bournemouth Library and a promenade performance alongside the main show.
Following on from their performances of Carmen Funebre, members of Teatr Biuro Podrozy ran two dynamic physical theatre workshops with young people from Weymouth and Portland. Alongside the Enclosure performance in North Dorset, local musicians worked with Dorset composer Karen Wimhurst on the sound element of the piece and ceramicist Bill Crumblehome taught local children how to make ‘neolithic pots’ like those found on the hill.
If you are interested in the arts or just enthusiastic about helping out in an exciting environment there are opportunities for volunteers to make a difference both with Inside Out and at any one of the arts organisations listed opposite.
