Inside Out Dorset

Inside Out Dorset will return in September 2014 with extraordinary events across Dorset, Bournemouth and Poole.

Festival History

Since 2005 the Inside Out Dorset festival has presented high quality, large-scale, outdoor arts events to more than 60,000 people.  Removing the barriers that can make art intimidating to some, Inside Out Dorset brings together incredible artistic work and combines it with beautiful, inspiring Dorset locations, creating a great arts festival for all.

Inside Out Dorset is unique among UK festivals. It is a high profile, non-metropolitan model promoting site-responsive contemporary performances in dispersed heritage locations. The carefully selected performances transform each place, giving audiences a different perspective. New site-specific commissions delve deeply into local heritage and traditions.

2012 and Beyond

During 2012 Inside Out Dorset attracted over 18,000 visitors in 10 days.

Harmonic Fields created by Pierre Savaugeot, was a sensory journey of 500 instruments, set on the breath-taking coastline of Portland. The marriage of Portland’s stunning landscape with the instruments was a masterpiece of programming and feedback overwhelming, as the installation touched the hearts and minds of everyone that attended.

Moving to Wimborne, Inside Out Dorset took more than 500 visitors on a voyage, into the dark realms of consumerism, exploring man’s hunger and greed.  The programme included a discussion with Satish Kumar, workshops with Tuig and a 2 night performance of Schraapzucht, a mesmerising and thought provoking theatrical piece, created by Tuig at Walford Mill Crafts.

Finally, to coincide with the closing ceremony of the Paralympic Games, the Inside Out Dorset festival made its way to Ashmore in North Dorset, where it transformed this quintessentially pretty English village into ‘Up in the Air’, a mini festival of art, circus, acrobats, live music, food and drink. Taking place over the weekend, Up in the Air played host to over 2,000 visitors that enjoyed the spectacle, fun, food and superb atmosphere - with performances provided byHors Pistes, Les Philebulistes, Rouge Elea, Upswing, Boy Le Monti and The Ambling Band. All of this formed part of an anglo-french programme focussed on the development of new circus, called PASS.

“2012 was an extraordinary year, with the Cultural Olympiad providing a great back drop for diverse art projects taking place all over the country. During this time, Inside Out Dorset gained both national and international acclaim, when it was invited to become part of the London 2012 Festival and won the coveted Poole Tourism Award"
Kate Wood - Activate Executive Director

Fulfilling the vision of the festival to bring great arts to all, we intend to continue bringing Inside Out to Dorset and work has already commenced on the programme for 2014.
