About New Mills Festival Art Trail & Big Weekend

The Art Trail forms part of the New Mills Festival which takes place across New Mills, Derbyshire from the 9th to the 25th September 2016.

The Art Trail turns the town into a gallery. In 2015 more than fifty local businesses signed up to host artists' work in their windows and premises.

Artists can apply for one or more of the opportunities below.

Submission is FREE. However, there is a £20 charge* made to successful artists for inclusion in the Art Trail promotional material.

*other pricing configurations may apply, depending on the venue, number of artists etc.

Art in Windows
To submit an entry to take part in the New Mills Festival Art Trail and have your work chosen to be displayed in one of the available windows, complete the application form which can be downloaded HERE and return to us for consideration.

Big Weekend 
The Art Trail includes a "Big Weekend", timed to coincide with the hugely popular Lantern Procession finale, which attracts an audience of more than 10,000 to the town. The Big Weekend sees artists and venues across New Mills open their doors to host pop-up exhibitions, open studios, workshops and demonstrations, and arts and crafts markets. Details of all the venues are included in the Art Trail. If you would like to open your studio/home/venue to take part in the Big Weekend, complete the application form which can be downloaded HERE and return to us for consideration.

Pop Up Venues
Pop Up venues can be open throughout the two-week period, or just open during the Big Weekend. If you would like to submit a proposal or work to be curated in the Pop Up Venues please consult the list below for full details including opening times and dates, costs, whether the space is manned or unmanned. Then complete the application, entering your choice(s) of venue on the form which can be downloaded HERE and return to us for consideration.

Theme
The Art Trail is un-themed, however the theme for the Lantern Procession this year is Inventions. Proposals which respond to this topic will be welcomed.

Larger Display Spaces
Alongside applications from artists for the smaller shop windows the organisers are particularly interested in hearing from artists who would like to tackle one of the bigger display spaces, either for a larger installation or for a display from a group. To register your interest:

Stage 1:

1. Submission is FREE however; there is a £20 charge made to successful artists for inclusion in the Arts Trail promotional material. Please state clearly if you wish to be considered for a pop-up venue and/or if you wish to take part in the Big Weekend *

2. Download the application form HERE and return to us by the deadline.
For your application to be considered, we MUST receive ALL of the information.

3. Return your completed application form and up to 6 images (please read notes below carefully) to: art@newmillsfestival.co.uk

Images - file size should be no more than 1MB each. Please use the following naming convention for your files surname_firstname_01.jpg (number the files 01 to 06 For example  Smith_John_01.jpg   Images can be submitted as jpg, png, tiff.

The deadline for this first stage is midnight Sunday 15th May

Stage 2:

1. You will be notified by midnight Sunday 22nd May of the outcome of the first stage selection.

2. Your entry fee MUST be paid in full by midnight Sunday 29th May. Payment can be made here:

 

3. After notification of selection and receipt of payment the team will match up your work with the various venues and supply contact details for you to arrange to view the display area and arrange installation.

Terms and Conditions

1. If selected you are agreeing to deliver install and remove your work from the venue chosen by New Mills Festival Art team. The team can support you in the installation of the work.

2. Work to be installed (by arrangement) from Saturday 3rd September. Completion by Friday 9th September.

3. Work to be removed from Monday 26th September or by a date arranged with the venue.

4. Any work sold must remain in situ until the exhibition closes and be collected during the week beginning Monday 26th September.

5. A printed festival brochure containing the Trail Map and artists’ details will be hand-delivered to more than 12,000 households with 6000 further copies available for visitors around the town and surrounding area. The brochure can also be downloaded via www.newmillsfestival.co.uk

6. Artists are responsible for their own public liability insurance and New Mills Festival will not be held liable for any costs incurred.

7. The Art Trail will be promoted as part of New Mills Festival.

8. New Mills Festival does not set out to make selling opportunities, however works can be sold through direct negotiations between the purchaser and artist.

9. New Mills Festival reserve the right to curate the event based on submissions that answer the call and the number of available display spaces.

10. By submitting you are agreeing to allow New Mills Festival to use images and written material to promote the event and your practice.

11. New Mills Festival will be marketing the event extensively via the festival brochure, our own mailing lists, newspapers and other publications, radio, website and social media.
