Landance is seeking an assistant to work with Ella Huhne and one other person to support the development of the visual art and design for this year’s Landance performances in the Valley of Stones, South Dorset Ridgeway.
Ella is the artistic director of Landance and develops the visual art and costumes for the performances. Her background is in theatre design and she specialises in developing the visual aspect of outdoor performances. The assistant will help with developing ideas around the themes the dancers are working with, trying out simple structures on site, sourcing materials and helping carry and set up props and sculptural forms. The project will develop simple and strong visual elements in response to the site, the sound and movement work being created by the other artists and with constant awareness of the audience presence in the performances and its potential effect on them.
The work involves taking part in a research and development week from Mon 30th June till Friday 4th July, and possibly some design development making trial structures in mid August/ early September, and working during the rehearsal period from Wednesday 10th September through to helping during the performances on Sat 20th and Sun 21st September. Availability can be discussed.
We are seeking an art/ design student or graduate with an interest in three dimensional work in the landscape and an open, collaborative and practical approach to work, will be happy working on rugged and quite steep terrain, and up for working outdoors in all weathers. It is important that you are reasonably fit and able to cope with working in that environment.
Given the location having access to a car is preferable as there is no public transport to the site, but lift sharing may be possible.
Payment for this role will be a set fee of £780.

In 2014 four performances will take place in the Valley of Stones, which is an ancient site of special scientific interest managed by Natural England. It is a performance piece involving seven dancers, sound artists and a musician who will respond to the sights and sounds of the valley in a live stunning performance.

Performance dates - 20th and 21st September, two each afternoon. The performances are FREE but numbers are restricted because of the importance of preserving the wildlife at the site, so each performance is ticketed.
