Community Curator, Dorset County Museum

The Community Curator will develop and deliver a meaningful programme of community engagement and outreach, represent Dorset County Museum in its local communities, and help to ensure that it is relevant to and representative of these communities. They will strive to embed community engagement across all aspects of the Museum’s work, and deliver a proof contemporary collecting that supports its planned new galleries and approach to interpretation. The role will support the Museum as it transforms its services in line with its mission to be the leading heritage, arts and cultural organisation in Dorset

Part Time 0.6 fte fixed term for two years.

 

The Wessex Museums Partnership (WMP) is a thriving consortium of the four principal museums across Dorset and Wiltshire that tell the stories of Wessex from prehistory to the present day.  It is an exciting moment for the WMP as from April 2018, we are one of the Arts Council England’s new National Portfolio Organisations.  As such we have an ambitious programme to deliver over the next four years.

 

Dorset County Museum is one of the key members of the WMP and is at a pivotalmomentinits170yearhistory, having alsosecuredamajorgrantfromtheHeritageLotteryFund (HLF).  It is therefore embarkingona£15.4millioncapitalexpansionprojecttoconstructtheinnovative,visitor-focused‘Tomorrow’sMuseumforDorset’.  ThiswillcompletelyreimaginetheMuseum-itsgalleries,exhibitions,storagefacilities,workingspacesandretailoffer-toproduceanorganisationabletobetterconserveandinterpretDorset’sinternationallysignificantheritageandbereadytomeettheexpectationsofmodernvisitors.

 

As a result of support from the WMP and HLF, Dorset County Museum is looking to recruit a Community Curator. Employed in its new Collections and Public Engagement Division, this will be an exciting time for the right candidate to help shape this new department and its approach to community engagement, outreach and public engagement, helping make this significant collection accessible to new audiences.
