Charity Trustee/Directors needed for Activate Performing Arts

Activate is looking for individuals passionate about culture and its impact on our communities to join us as Charity Trustees/Directors of its Board and help build its vision for the future.

Activate aims to be one of the leaders in presenting land-based outdoor performance and making extraordinary performance and high-quality arts events happen.  We produce, promote and present theatre dance and outdoor arts and are home to the Inside Out Dorset festival.  Activate is based in Dorset and works in local, national and international projects.

Activate is an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation and also receives funding from Dorset County Council, Borough of Poole and Bournemouth Borough Council.  Set up 25 years ago as a dance agency, the organisation has developed significantly over the past ten years believing passionately in the ability of artists to affect positive change to people’s lives.

A committed Board of Trustees/Directors is crucial to our success and we are looking for those who have a shared passion for the arts.

Help Activate support the development of dance, theatre and outdoor arts and realise the next phase in our organisation's evolution.

We are particularly interested in hearing from people with skills in one or more of the following areas:

Activate Performing Arts Ltd. (Activate) is seeking talented and dynamic individuals to join its Board of Charity Trustees/Directors

Activate is committed to challenging perceptions that the arts are elitist and not for everyone.  We seek to remove barriers to participation, particularly for under-represented groups and individuals and champion arts for its inherent value as well as the effect it has on our general well-being and health.  Our heritage is in dance and more recently theatre and outdoor arts.  We will continue to work in these fields, with a particular interest in cross arts form opportunities.

 

VISION

To create a rich culture of performing arts in and around locations in our region and to be recognised nationally for presenting land-based outdoor arts.

 

AIMS

  • To work with artists who reflect the diversity of our contemporary society and in line with our artistic vision.*
  • To work with our international partners in developing artistic practice, particularly outdoor and land based arts.
  • To work with our rich variety of communities, international partners and to work with diverse artists reflecting contemporary society.
  • To develop audiences as participants/‘active spectators’ and reach the breadth of our communities.
  • To inspire all in our community to take part in performing arts.  To help them to have a lifelong engagement in the arts and for those wanting to pursue a career in the arts, to offer progression routes for them, that are both ‘traditional’ and ‘non-traditional’.
  • To demonstrate that artists can both affect and provide positive change in our communities.
  • To work in partnership locally, nationally and internationally so that we can work on production, development and promotion of the arts in other sectors (such as education, health, environment, community development, voluntary, social enterprise, business and the wider creative industries).

 

OBJECTIVES

  1. We will promote and present a wide range of high quality performance and outdoor arts at existing venues and in other locations within our festival; Inside Out Dorset, as well as festivals and venues run by arts and tourism partners - and to develop audiences for them.
  2. We will produce and support the production of new high quality innovative work, especially by artists based in the county and sub region.
  • We will support performance artists, producers and practitioners at all stages of their career to fulfil their potential, especially those working in dance, theatre and outdoor arts, from emerging, to mature artist. This includes the provision of information, advice, signposting, networking, publicity and advocacy services to the performance and outdoor arts sector as well as our partners and the general public.
  • We will increase the range and depth of participation and engagement in theatre, dance and outdoor arts, specifically working with diverse communities, young people and our elders/older people, which make up a growing population in the county.
  • We will help create a distinctive sense of place: a county with the reputation as a strong cultural destination and build on the unique attributes of the geographic location.
  • We will strengthen our business model and strategy for the delivery of our ambitions, utilising our partnership model of working, recognising our reliance on public subsidy and exploring how we manage the cuts in public finance.

New Board Members: Trustee Directors – The Role

You will need to help Activate into its next phase of develop with vision and ensuring the board meets its governance responsibilities for the organisation in line with the principles that guide us.

Main Tasks

Strategic Overview

You will need to help to determine the organisation’s mission and purpose.

You will need to help represent Activate strategically at a local, regional and national level.

Management Responsibilities

  • Attend and participate in all Board Meetings, workshops and ad hoc meetings as required, with shared responsibility for collective decision making.
  • Work with the Executive Director supporting her/him to achieve and further the vision of the organisation and assess her/his performance.
  • Ensure there are appropriate resources for the company to fulfil its ambitions.

Communication and Advocacy

  • Enhance the company’s profile by communicating our ambitions to the wider community.

Fundraising and Finance Strategy

  • Support and help the organisation in its fund-raising at stakeholder events
  • Ensure the company operates within the law and in line with its fiscal responsibilities.
  • Approve the annual budget and ensure appropriate financial controls are in place.

Recruitment and Induction

  • Responsible with the Chair for the recruitment of the Executive Director.
  • Responsible with the Chair for the recruitment and induction of additional Board Members.

Monitoring and Policy Development

  • Ensure that the company operates with legal and ethical integrity.
  • Monitoring the organisation as it plans and delivers its ambitions – measuring achievements against aims and objectives..
  • Monitor the programme to ensure it is effective and in line with the vision.

Diversity

  • Embrace diversity throughout the organisation and support the promotion of a positive work environment where difference is embraced and everyone is treated with respect and dignity.

Health & Safety

  • Responsible for overseeing the management of health & safety, as laid down in legislation and in line with the company’s policies and procedures.

Skills, experience and abilities

  • Management experience – within the arts or related to a skills area below and a passion for the arts

  • Financial management experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills

One or more specific skills/experience in the following areas:

  • Outdoor Arts
  • Dance
  • Diversity
  • HR
  • Environment

We are also very interested in applications from young (18+) arts professionals – artists, producers/administrators.

Time commitment

4 Board Meetings a year including the AGM.

Formal meetings with Stakeholders – approx once a year.

4 Potential Sub-group meetings a year

Various public events, receptions and performances throughout the year.

1-2 Away Days per year – Board and staff.

Meeting expenses can be claimed for this voluntary position
