Marketing & Communications Manager (maternity cover)

1 year part-time contract, 3 days per week - flexible

Salary: £27,000 pro rata PAYE

Our Marketing & Communications Manager is having a baby, so we seek someone to hold the fort in an action packed and exciting year ahead. Not only are we bringing back our Inside Out Dorset festival this September after we had to postpone in 2020; we will also be celebrating our 30th birthday, following the reveal of our re-brand and new website this Spring!

Some of the essential things we are looking for:

  • You will be based in or on the edge of Dorset. We are flexible but need someone who can regularly work in the office in Dorchester and be on the ground for the festival
  • You will have 3 years+ experience in arts marketing, creating campaigns and making them happen
  • A proven track record of delivering results and coming up with plans and ideas and persuading others to support these
  • A great project manager who is highly organised
  • Confidence with maintaining our presence online via our new website and social media
  • Experience in managing tight budgets and an ‘eye for detail’.

You will lead on the marketing and communications strategy for Activate: focussing on promoting our Inside Out Dorset Festival taking place this September, other marketing for the organisation and supporting colleagues to deliver specific marketing on other projects. You will help us to deliver on our Audience Development Plan with a clear mind on who we are working with or trying to reach. Whilst developing strategic marketing plans for different areas of the organisation you must be confident in managing your time to also deliver marketing activity on a day-to-day basis. You will help to roll out our new branding (in place March 2021) and website in our 30th year where we celebrate being able to bring people together again. You will be adept at managing a team of creative freelancers who help to bring our vision to life.

Job Purpose: To manage the marketing and communications for Activate.

Reports to: Executive Producer

Responsible for: temporary assistants, PR agencies, design agencies, Kickstart Marketing Assistants, front of house during festival periods

We are a highly committed team of people dedicated to our work and we need someone to communicate what we do to all the people we work with and for. The responsibilities include those outlined below.

  • Regularly update Audience Development and Digital Strategies in consultation with the rest of the team. Digital Strategy will include but not limited to website management and development, social media marketing and e-marketing
  • Devise and implement a holistic Strategic Marketing plan for Activate and all its areas of work (informed by Audience Development & Digital Strategies)
  • Devise specific project marketing strategies and support staff to implement them
  • Take the lead on implementing the marketing strategy for Inside Out Dorset Festival (the festival)
  • Take a lead on reviewing and updating the new Activate website
  • Oversee all the company design, print procurement and distribution
  • Identify and create other promotional opportunities to raise the profile of Activate and the art forms we support
  • Identify opportunities for shared promotions with partners and collaborators
  • Write and update copy and lead images for the organisation in line with its mission
  • Oversee and coordinate the gathering of promotional materials from artists and partners across our programmes
  • Design and produce the festival brochures, press releases and other publicity materials working with appropriate external agencies
  • Negotiate print and media partnerships
  • Plan regional and national PR and media work – managing PR service providers where necessary on large scale projects
  • Act as the main point of contact for the media
  • Work with the tourism sector to develop wider cultural tourism strands
  • Report and analyse marketing coverage and impact
  • Lead on audience research and data capture
  • Plan festival and large event evaluations with Producers and lead on creation, delivery and analysis of audience surveys with the Senior Administrator
  • Implement the new in-house branded templates for external communications e.g. Activate e-newsletter, artist opportunity mail-outs, volunteer call-outs. 
  • Manage the organisation’s marketing budget and festival marketing budget.

About you

  • An experienced marketing professional who is eager to take up this challenge. You like to be busy and work well in a small dynamic team
  • You will be based in or on the edge of Dorset. We are flexible but need someone who can regularly work in the office in Dorchester and be on the ground for the festival
  • You will have 3 years+ experience in arts marketing, creating campaigns and making them happen
  • Passion for equal access to the arts for all and to make 2021 a fantastic year for our audiences.
  • Able to work strategically whilst also delivering on all day-to-day tactical marketing activity
  • A proven track record of delivering results and coming up with plans and ideas and persuading others to support these
  • Someone who is hands-on and likes getting stuck in with smaller tasks
  • A great project manager who is highly organised
  • Confidence with maintaining our presence online via our new website and social media
  • An enthusiastic and creative person.
  • Experience in managing tight budgets and have an ‘eye for detail’.

Things which would be useful for you to have:

  • Full driving license and own transport
  • Experience of charitable sector
  • Experience of working with artists
  • Knowledge of the local area.
