Opportunity Overview

Volunteering Opportunity

Green Space Dark Skies – the Dorset event, Saturday 11th June

Green Space Dark Skies is part of the nationwide festival of creativity, UNBOXED.

The Green Space Dark Skies project will run from April to September 2022. Thousands of people are being invited into the landscape to create large-scale outdoor artworks in 20 of the UK’s most outstanding outdoor spaces, including a location within the Dorset Area of Outstanding Beauty (AONB) for one day only on Saturday 11th June.

The gatherings across the country will be created at dusk by participants, referred to as Lumenators. They will be guided along pathways carrying smart lights that will enable digital movement to be captured on film. Films will be made at each location, and each will incorporate the stories of the people and places featured and will be broadcast online after the event.

To protect the spaces, the exact locations will only be revealed to the people who have registered to take part. However, we can tell you that it happens on:

Saturday 11th June and will take place in a Dorset AONB area, yet to be revealed.

Join hundreds of other Lumenators on a midsummer evening to experience the magic of an outstanding location within the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

The Roles

There are two types of volunteer roles within Green Spaces, Dark Skies Dorset event.

  1. Basecamp Volunteer

At the event, there will be a ‘Basecamp’ which is our central hub. At the Basecamp there will be activities for participants. There are opportunities for people facing, and non-people facing roles. You might:

  • Assist with activities at Basecamp
  • Answer questions at an information point
  • Distribute materials for the activities
  • Support audience members with additional needs

There will also be many additional volunteer roles at Basecamp, yet to be confirmed.

  1. Flock Leader Volunteer

Participants at the event will be attending in groups called Flocks (no more than 25 persons in a Flock). We seek volunteers who are happy to engage with Flocks on the day of the event, and lead them through the event, such as signing in, or moving across the site. You’ll meet your Flock on the day and stick with them throughout the event.

Why volunteer?

Green Spaces, Dark Skies has limited attendance. By volunteering, you will guarantee your participation in this exclusive event. The event is tailored so that, as volunteers, you also take part therefore, you won’t miss out on this one off, national event. You’ll be representing Dorset, nationally, and its landscape. You will be helping people engage with the landscape who may not have done so before so, as a volunteer, you will be integral in helping to make our county, and its beautiful outdoors, more accessible, welcoming, and enjoyable for everyone.

Our Commitment to you

Our Volunteer Manager, David, will make sure that you have food and refreshments and that you are well- briefed. He’ll be attentive to your individual needs and tailor the experience to suit your strengths and make sure you get the most out of your time.
