Opportunity Overview

As part of the Government’s Kickstart Scheme, we have created 3 new roles at Activate. The Kickstart Scheme is a £2 billion fund that is supporting the direct creation of high quality 6-month work placements aimed at those aged 16-24 who are on Universal Credit and are deemed to be at risk of long-term unemployment. It will give young people the chance to build their confidence and skills in the workplace, and to gain experience that will improve their chances of going on to find long-term, sustainable work.


Support our Marketing & Communications Manager in promoting our Inside Out Dorset Festival 2021 this September. Tasks will include:


Update our VIP, press and media databases

Contact confirmed festival artists and partners to collect marketing materials

Save photos and videos to our database in Dropbox with credits

Research: confirmed artists’ social media channels and collate spreadsheet, transport links for each festival site and relevant listings sites

Investigate leaflet distributers in the area and get quotes

Assist in preparation of VIP events.

Audience targeting:

Undertake marketing tasks focusing on general public audiences.

Learn about the different audience profiles and understand our audience development strategy

Research: groups and networks which fit in with our audience development strategy

Research an create a database of local relevant groups and networks, then send promotional materials about the festival to them.


Monitor and update Activate website and festival social media channels.

Scout nearby areas for places to promote Inside Out Dorset events: take photos and notes.

Distribute flyers/posters for the festival in and around the event sites and other relevant distribution points.

Help to promote Inside Out Dorset via our partners’ online platforms and via other online listings.

Work on front of house points at the festival, welcoming the public and giving them information.

Tidy and organise promotional materials.


Assist with in house photography/video documentation, meet and support professional photographers/video makers at the festival.

Research ideas for digital story telling and ensure relevant digital content and assets are kept up to date.

Desirable Skills: competent using email and Microsoft Office programmes including Word and Excel.

Essential personal qualities: organised and punctual, passionate about contemporary performance, outgoing and communicative, good at ‘thinking on your feet’, able to work independently, good communication skills and passionate about the arts.

Day to day support:

the role will be line managed by our Marketing & Communications Manager, Verity Shallaker who will have regular one to ones with the employee. A weekly workplan will be provided. We will offer professional and friendly guidance from an experienced team of staff, encouragement to take part in and see a wide range of art events in the county. We can offer producer feedback and sector links relevant to their artform/practice if they are creative themselves. We will introduce the employee to our Board of Trustees.


Our team will encourage them to develop their own peer network through Dorset What Next and networking events with other arts organisations’ Kickstart employees during the placement. We offer the following networks that the employee can tap into: ‘What Next Dorset’, the South West Freelance Task Force, our CREATE! cohort of young creatives, Dorset Theatre and Dance artists through Dancenet and Theatrenet, Dorset Theatre Promoters Consortium, Dorset Festivals Consortium and Women Leader’s South West.


To support the participant, we will help identify an appropriate mentor and facilitate this dependent on the employees needs.

Progression beyond the placement:

the employee will receive support from us as a leading arts organisation, as well as our partners; support in job applications: searching, approach, CV and application writing. We will offer relevant training where appropriate through our industry networks and providers. We will add the participant to our Arts Marketing Association group membership so they will have access to their training and resources.

These posts are a part of the Government Kickstart scheme, candidates must be aged 16-24 and claiming Universal Credit to be eligible.
