Theatre Orb is a new company which specialises in new writing for theatre; that is theatre produced in the past twenty years or brand new work by emerging playwrights. In April 2010, Theatre Orb produced a new writing festival at Poole Lighthouse, which saw writers such as Nell Leyshon (Bedlam, Comfort Me With Apples, Don't Look Now, Glass Eels, The Farm), Danny Stack (EastEnders, Doctors), Phil Porter (Associate Artistic Director, Unicorn Theatre) as well as Jack Bradley (formerly Literary Manager of the National Theatre)give masterclasses over one exciting weekend devoted to the written word.
On the same weekend, Theatre Orb were pleased to produce Simon Stephens' 'Herons' in the Studio Theatre. The production was described by Blackmore Vale magazine as 'an astonishing feat'.
Our latest project has been The Vault, a project set up by Theatre Orb to provide playwrights with the opportunity to have their work developed through informal, rehearsed readings in venues such as The Winchester, Bournemouth and Poole Lighthouse. We had six readings in total of 'Flattered' by Chris Tapner, 'Bursary Boy' by Jimmy Brown, A Million Things by Tracy Harris, Incoherent States by Rebecca Nesvet, Acts Of Seduction by William Stanton and Spoiled Rotten by Michael Smietana and Clive Green. The project was supported by Lorna Rees, Theatre Development Co-ordinator for Activate and John Foster, BAFTA award-winning BBC Screenwriter and Screenwriter in Residence and Subject Leader of Screenwriting Programmes at Bournemouth University.
