Peter John Cooper has been earning his living as a writer and director for getting on for forty years. As a playwright he has been commissioned to write for theatres and companies throughout the UK. As a librettist he has worked with composer Rodrick Skeaping to produce songs, an oratorio as well as for a number of musical plays. His poetry is written for performance where he specialises on full length forty minute events with music and actors. He finds short-story writing a perfect place to combine poetry with performance as most of his work is meant to be read aloud. This means he has a particular interest in stories with dialogue or which have a strong author’s voice.
As a director he has specialised in small scale and community work and understands the vicissitudes of rural touring and site specific work. He was the first Artistic Director of The Oxfordshire THeatre Co in the 1980s and has directed shows at The Royal National Theatre and one or two that have toured Europe and the rest of the World. He has been closely involved in the arts scene in Dorset for the last twenty years and set up Spyway Projects with designer Annette Sumption to develop work in the region. He toured "Captain Pugwash" throughout the UK and produced work by, among others, the Bafta winning Guy Hibbert. In 2010 he directed his own play "Little Arthur's History of England" which toured with ArtsReach throughout Dorset. He has recently been associated with AsOne Theatre Co where he directed "Hey Baby" in 2009 and "She Opened the Door" in 2010 and 2011.
