Guidelines & application

Background

In Dorset and East Devon work is underway with communities and artists to develop processions and outdoor events. As part of this work we are very pleased to be able to offer A new perspective – a series of small bursaries to enable local artists and communities to gain knowledge and skills from elsewhere in the UK to inform and develop work in Dorset and East Devon. A new perspective has been made possible through the generous funding of the Creative Coast Group. The Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site is a unique and exciting resource with a rich history of processions and outdoor events along the coast. We would encourage applicants to think about how a bursary may help to develop work related to or inspired by your locality and your environment and its relationship with the Jurassic Coast.

How do I use the grant available through A new perspective?

We believe that it may be helpful for artists or community members to see work that is taking place elsewhere in the UK to inform, inspire and help develop their work here in Dorset and East Devon. A new perspective aims to support communities and artists to travel to see high quality, artistic outdoor events that will inform locality-focussed work related to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and your local landscape. The bursary can support travel expenses to events or cover the cost of tickets if the event is ticketed. We will also consider applications for bursaries for the professional development of artists and community members. It may be useful to attend a workshop or conference elsewhere in the country that focuses on a particular skill – for example making large-scale puppets – that you can then use in your own outdoor work.

Who is eligible?

This is open to any individual who thinks that their work (either their own practice or their work within a community, for example a carnival committee) may benefit from either going to see outdoor work elsewhere which is of a high standard – or attending a conference or course that will inform their work. For example (this list is not exhaustive):

Artists (of all disciplines)

Carnival committee members

Community group leaders (e.g. youth clubs)

Teachers

Amount available and how to apply

We only have a small amount available - bursaries up to 75% of costs to a maximum of £150 will be available from November 2010 – May 2011. We do not want to make the application onerous, however we are very interested in how you will apply your visit or course/conference to developing work for the locality of Dorset/East Devon and the Jurassic Coast and will require a short report (see reporting and monitoring). To apply for a bursary please complete the short application form attached to these guidelines and send to: Amy Eastwood, Processions Coordinator, Activate Performing Arts, 7-9 The Little Keep, The Barracks, Bridport Road, Dorchester, DT1 1SQ Or simply email to: amy@activateperformingarts.org.uk.

What we are looking for...

We want to support applicants who want to see work/develop their skills to create high quality, artistic work. We will be looking for evidence of the following in your application:

1 Either:

The work/event that you intend to visit is of high artistic quality (we would expect the work to have some kind of quality ‘mark’, for example to be supported or funded by a recognised body – for example the Arts Council, ISAN etc – or if a smaller piece of work, to be working with highly respected artists/practitioners with a range of experience in the field)

Or:

That the course or conference that you intend to undertake will teach you new skills not readily available in the sub-region (Dorset and East Devon) to create work for the outdoors (i.e. you wouldn’t be able to undertake the same course in Dorset or East Devon)

2 There is a clear link between what you are going to see/the course conference you want to attend and your own artistic practice or plans for community work

3 That the work that you create or start to develop as a result of your visit/course/conference is related to the landscape of Dorset and East Devon.

If you have any questions at all – or have an idea and are not sure if it is eligible – please call Amy Eastwood, Processions Coordinator on 01305 268752 Or email amy@activateperformingarts.org.uk.

Deadlines

There is no set deadline for applications to allow for opportunities to be taken advantage of as and when they arise. However we will ‘hold back’ a proportion of the funding to enable artists and communities to take advantage of anything that arise in the spring. All bursaries are to be allocated by May 2011 and therefore if you want to take advantage of this scheme please ensure that we have received your application by 1 April 2011.

Reporting and monitoring

We will require a short report on how you have spent the money and how it is going to (or not!) inform your work here in Dorset and East Devon. Once you are successful we will send you a short form that you will need to complete for monitoring purposes.
