Activate’s vision is to create a rich culture of performing arts in and around our region and to be recognised nationally for presenting land-based outdoor arts. 

Our aim is to be a national leader in presenting outdoor land based arts and work with international partners; to engage large and diverse audiences in this work and our associated work with venues, promoters and community partners in our participatory programme.

 

We present, promote, and support the production of, and help develop, a diverse contemporary practice in performance. This includes dance, theatre, outdoor arts and all the extraordinary ways they are presented; from live art, physical theatre, digital arts and puppetry to contemporary circus.

 

This post is a job share position with the current full time post-holder, Wendy Petitdemange.  Part of the role focuses on outreach for our festival; Inside Out Dorset.  The festival creates extraordinary events in extraordinary locations, predominantly free to the public, all outdoors  with some site-specific performances.

 

Activate is looking for an imaginative, dynamic and experienced Producer to work with Wendy and the rest of the team, who shares our passion for theatre and its transformational qualities.  Do you have the skills and enthusiasm to take up the challenge of this position?  We’d love to hear from you. Theatre, Education and Outreach

 

Job Title:  Producer - Theatre, Education and Outreach (Job Share – Permanent: 2 days per

week)

 

Job Purpose:  To raise the profile and assist the growth of: theatre; education; and outreach

through the development and management of strategic projects (in particular the Inside Out

Dorset festival), practical partnerships, and the support of professional theatre practitioners.

                                          

Reports to:  Executive and Artistic Director

 

Main Duties:

 

  • To work in partnership with theatre practitioners, venues and promoters/producers, local authorities, colleges and other partners to plan for the long term future of theatre development, outreach and education in the area, and to ensure these plans are integrated into the company’s strategic development planning process.

 

  • To work with artists, practitioners, venues/promoters/producers and other partners to plan for the long term development of theatre.  To advocate, create and maintain effective working partnerships with arts and non-arts agencies, organisations and institutions in the statutory, voluntary, independent and private sectors, locally, regionally and nationally, in order to support the theatre ecology in the South West and deliver the company’s programme.

 

  • To support the development of land based, outdoor practice, specifically in the area of outreach and contribute to the development of Inside Out Dorset, the biennial festival of outdoor arts produced by Activate that presents extraordinary events in extraordinary places.

 

  • To support the development of local theatre companies and new theatre productions locally and their presentation locally, regionally and nationally by:- commissioning and co-presenting where possible new work by theatre makers/companies within and outside the region; supporting/advising on company administration and development; tour management; assisting with funding applications or by providing other support.

 

  1. To co-ordinate a programme of Continuing Professional Development opportunities for professional theatre practitioners whether performers, directors, teachers, technical staff or others, which may include courses, workshops, mentoring or other individual opportunities and support.

 

  • To devise and plan imaginative and sustainable participatory, educational and community theatre initiatives, in partnership with relevant arts and non arts organisations and individuals, involving a range of people, groups and settings in the community, and to oversee their effective management and delivery.  Groups may include children within and outside the formal education sector, young people, older people, people with disabilities, people in healthcare, people in the criminal justice system and those socially excluded by their circumstances, ethnic background or other factors.  

 

  • To extend opportunities for audiences to see local, regional, national and international theatre productions by advising venues and promoters/producers on companies and their work, by working to extend the existing touring network, and by providing advice and marketing support to develop audiences for theatre.

 

  • To support, extend and contribute actively to the existing communication network for theatre development locally, regionally and nationally, by co-ordinating opportunities for theatre practitioners and other individuals and organisations interested in theatre to meet, discuss plans and share practice, by providing up to date information for Activate’s news.

 

  • To research and secure project funding from local, regional and national sources to support theatre and outreach projects initiated and managed by Activate.

 

  • To advise and assist other agencies and organisations further the development of theatre locally.

 

  • To manage freelance project co-ordinators employed to deliver theatre projects in accordance with the business plan.

 

  • To manage project budgets as agreed with the Director and Board.

 

  • To set up and manage effective monitoring and evaluation processes for each project, in consultation with the Director.

 

  • To keep abreast of theatre policy and strategic development regionally, nationally and internationally, to note good practice and disseminate to others.

 

  • To work in conjunction with the Director to devise and implement the company’s communications and marketing strategy in relation to the company and to individual projects.

 

  • To work collaboratively with the Director and other members of the staff team in order to share skills and expertise, work on joint projects, maximise the benefits of joint funding applications and other initiatives, and avoid unnecessary overlap and duplication of effort.     

 

  • Any other duties consistent with the job purpose above as may be reasonably required.

 

  • To work with the Director in order to ensure the delivery of the above main duties are set within a manageable work load, and agree the priorities for delivery that fulfil the company’s business plan objectives.

 

This post is expected to be self-supporting in terms of production of letters, reports, funding applications and so on, as will the project co-ordinators the post line manages. 

 

Although the Senior Administrator is the first point of contact for the public, all team members are expected to act as ambassadors for the organisation and its full range of activities where necessary, including answering general enquiries from the public

Skills required

 

Essential Arts Expertise

 

Thorough, up-to-date knowledge of contemporary theatre practice and producing.

 

At least 2 years experience of arts/theatre development/producing in professional and community settings. 

 

Understanding of and demonstrable commitment to the role of the arts in supporting and delivering social and economic agendas.

 

Broad knowledge and understanding of contemporary arts structures, funding and income generation.

 

Desirable Arts Expertise

  • Education to degree level or equivalent industry experience.
  • Experience of developing and touring professional theatre productions.
  • Knowledge of other performing art forms.
  • Experience of managing outreach and education programmes.

 

Essential Management Skills

  • Proven ability to develop practical projects to deliver strategic priorities.
  • Experience of project management.
  • Experience of or proven ability to line manage freelance project co-ordinators.
  • Experience of successful fundraising and income generation from national, regional and local sources.
  • Experience of or demonstrable ability to establish effective partnerships with local and regional voluntary, independent and statutory bodies.
  • Experience of or demonstrable ability to manage budgets successfully.

Terms of employment 

Post:                                                      Producer – Theatre, Education and Outreach

Salary:                                                  Up to £26,000 pro rata per annum, depending on experience.

Contract:                                             Job-share, permanent post, (subject to ongoing funding – Activate is an Arts Council England South West National Portfolio Organisation and receives core funding from Dorset County Council and the Borough of Poole).  The post is subject to a six-month probationary period.   

Hours of work:                                  15 hours per week, days to be agreed.   Flexible working will be necessary with some evening and weekend work.  Overtime will not be paid but time off in lieu for work in excess of the stated hours may be taken, with the agreement of the Executive Director.

Holidays:                                             23 days a year pro rata, rising to 26 days after five years service, plus public holidays.  Holidays to be agreed with the Director in advance.

Expenses:                                           All agreed expenses incurred in carrying out the work will be reimbursed. 

Notice period:                                  During the probationary period, notice is one month on either side, and three months thereafter.

Location:                                             Activate Office, Dorchester, Dorset.
