The selection committee for the Sprout! commission are delighted to announce that theatre company Inspector Sands have been awarded the commission to produce a new piece of theatre for 3-5 year olds. Their idea, Rock Pool, will be a participative semi-underwater performance described by the company as “a crustacean version of Waiting For Godot. For children.”
When a big storm whips up the sea, two very different creatures are left stranded in an isolated rock pool, far from the open water. As their little pool starts to drain away, Prawn and Crab don’t have long to find a way of getting home. Funny, tender, exuberant, partially-submerged theatre (contains rock music and splashy dancing).
Inspector Sands is an award-winning theatre company who have built a reputation for an irreverent and playful performance style. The Sprout! commission will give the company the opportunity to create their first piece of work for children. Inspector Sands have toured across the UK and internationally, most recently to New York and China. Rock Pool will begin development in autumn 2012 with a development process in Children’s Centres and will tour initially across Surrey and Somerset in 2013.
“We set out to find a group of artists who would bring something new to the table and we’re delighted that Inspector Sands have taken up this challenge. With over 200 proposals we have been astonished at the level of ambition and appetite within the theatre community to make work for the very young.”
